CHICKS!!!!! We have finally brought home baby chicks. This, my friends, is a step in our journey that feels like it has taken FOREVER. It may seem like such a small step for some but for us, it is huge. The feeling we get from taking a bowl outside and filling it with the most delicious arugula, kale and butter lettuce is indescribable. We can’t even imagine what it is going to feel like, gathering eggs from our own chickens. To know those little ladies are loved and eat well. To know that they have space to scratch, peck, dig and kick just makes us smile. We are just so excited. We were going to get a mix of Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rock but we ended up with all Rhode Islands. And by ended up, I mean we are super impatient individuals and couldn’t wait another week so we got all the same breed.
These little ladies are going to bless us with eggs. When they are done blessing us with eggs they will bless our dinner table. Some look at us strange when we tell them they are dual purpose birds. That they will give us eggs and when the time comes, they will give us meat. Doesn’t mean we won’t love the crap out of them. It doesn’t mean we won’t find names that fit their personalities. We are still going to treat them as if they are part of the family. Those reasons are the reasons why I am 100% content with these birds making their way to our dinner table.
We go to the grocery store and buy chicken. A chicken that was crammed so close to other chickens they couldn’t even move their wings. BUT we are ok with it because out of sight, out of mind. Right? For us, that’s not right. To each their own but for us, knowing that these animals were loved and taken care of is the right way to do things. And we feel at peace with it. Will “processing” them be one of the hardest things to do the first, hundred times? Absolutely. Could I do it with ease? Not even a little bit. BUT this is the life style we are drawn to. A life style that feels right to us. As hard as it may be, we are content with our decision.
These little baby chicks are going to love the life that is instore for them. We are putting together their home over the next few weeks. Theses little ladies still need to be watched every few hours for the next few weeks. So by the time they are ready to go outside, we will have busted down our fence to place their coop. We will also build a run so they can enjoy the sun light with out feeling insecure. And again by we, I mean my husband. Not that I don’t love getting in there with him, (hunny, you know that) but damn it, I gotta be a mama yo. I will be capturing my husbands hard work on this chicken journey of ours, so stay tuned.
