We are going to make up some simple honey cough syrup.
As I dive deeper into my herbal studies, I find that Mother Nature continues to blow my mind even more than I thought possible. Everything we need to be our optimal selves is right there growing all around us. And the beautiful concept about the whole thing is the incredible circle that exists when it comes to plants and herbal medicine. I came across a quote that really resonated with me,
“Our very humanness depends on them, and in return, they depend on us. To deny this is to deny our part in the great web of life. Their out-breath is our in-breath, our exhale, their inhale.” –Stephen Harrod Buhner (Buhner, 2002, p. 278)
This quote couldn’t be more true. The plants need us to take care of them and in turn they take care of us. How incredible is that?
In times of need, especially in times of sickness, we tend to reach for over the counter medication. Medication that tends to mute the actual cause of the sickness rather than heal it.
When we utilize food and medicinal herbs to help heal our bodies in time of sickness, or any time really, we start to see a difference from the inside out. A difference of healing rather than a long drawn out process that feels like, “the longest cold of your life.”
And with cold and flu season upon us, I’d rather be armed than stuck in bed. Besides these incredible remedies that we stash up our sleeve, this cough syrup has made it on our list of must haves.
So, let’s dive into a simple to make all natural cough syrup that contains only two ingredients. That’s right y’all, TWO!
What is in our homemade cough syrup?
We are using two simple ingredients that I can almost guarantee you already have in your pantry. Onion and honey.
Why onion and honey?
Onion is considered to have warming properties to it. This helps warm up the chest and help break up the mucus, allowing you to cough it up and out of your body. It also has antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties to it. This will help ease discomfort and help your body fight off whatever bacteria is causing the cough.
Honey is a powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial and boosts your immune system. Honey has wonderful soothing properties to it as well.
***A little note on honey, use organic raw honey. Local honey is a huge bonus. Using raw organic honey you will find that is has the most beneficial properties to it. When honey is not raw, it tends to be pasteurized which means that the honey is heated to such a high temperature that it kills off any bacteria. They do this to keep us “safe,” in a sense, but at the same time it is the natural bacteria in the honey that keeps us healthy. Do your research and make the best decision.
Mix these two together and boom, you’ve got a powerful homemade cough syrup that your family will benefit from.
How to make your homemade cough syrup?
This syrup is so simple to make it is ridiculous.
Step 1: Take a small onion and slice it into rings.
Step 2: Pour your honey over it until it’s covered.
Step 3: Cover and let sit for 24 hours.
Step 4: Remove the onion and store in the refrigerator. Cough syrup will last in fridge up to 6 months.
That is literally it my friends. I mean, how easy was that!?! A super simple process to keep you and your family healthy.
How much do you take?
For kids over 1 year: 1 tsp 3 times a day
***To make this syrup easy for kids to take, you can always mix the tsp in a small amount of water. They’ll never know!🤫
For adults: 1 tbs 3 times a day
***It is super important to note that children under the age of 1 years old should NOT have honey. Unless approved by your doctor. Please use your best judgement and knowledge.
